The mild Western North Carolina climate and the defined four seasons in Henderson County allow for year-round outdoor activities at nearby attractions among the beautiful mountains. DuPont State Forest is the most visited state forest in North Carolina, with six outstanding waterfalls and several lakes. The forest offers over 80 miles of trail, nearly all of which is open to both equestrians and mountain bikers. Pisgah National Forest is a great place for those interested in camping, picnicking, swimming, fishing, hunting, canoeing, rock climbing, rafting, tubing, and bird and butterfly watching. The Blue Ridge Parkway, "America's Favorite Drive" is filled with outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities such as campgrounds, picnic areas, trails and lodges. Chimney Rock Park, in Lake Lure, NC is located at a soaring elevation of 2,280 feet with 75-mile views The North Carolina Arboretum a wonderful resource for education and conservation, offers classes, workshops and nature walks. The Carl Sandburg National Historic Site offers a guided house tour, a dairy goat barn and five miles of trails with over 500 species of vascular plants. The French Broad River meanders through the area and provides opportunities for rafting, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and simply enjoying the surrounding forests of flowering dogwoods, poplars, and mossy sycamores.
