DuPont State Forest is the most visited state forest in North Carolina, with six outstanding waterfalls and several lakes. The forest offers over 80 miles of trail, nearly all of which is open to both equestrians and mountain bikers. The Carl Sandburg National Historic Site offers a guided house tour, a dairy goat barn and five miles of trails with over 500 species of vascular plants.
The French Broad River meanders through the area and provides opportunities for rafting, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and simply enjoying the surrounding forests of flowering dogwoods, poplars, and mossy sycamores.
